A musical version of John Powers' classic comic novel of the 1960s Catholic subculture stars Eddie Ryan a Chicago boy who learns about the important questions in life in his years at an all-boys Catholic school on Chicago's South Side. He views it all through the prism of his Catholic mentality which often deepens the mystery but sometimes clarifies it. In the musical Ryan is infatuated with a chubby girl Becky Bakowski who becomes his best friend and later falls in love with when she matures into a beautiful woman. More importantly (and for the ongoing good graces of the Catholic Church&mdashin recent light of the child molestation lawsuits) the Ryan character eventually decides to stop questioning his faith and rejoin the church as a teacher at his old Catholic high school. He has found himself with the love of his high-school sweetheart and his lifelong commitment to teaching the Catholic faith. The original coming of age musical involves the 1950s Catholic education of eight Chicago children following them from the start of elementary school through the senior prom and beyond. Along the way it touches on such topics as first confessions puppy love patron saints teacher's pets sex education classes and the importance of wearing panties under the school uniform's plaid pleated skirt so the shoes wouldn't reflect up.
