There was simply no precedent as Johnny's release was the first greatest hits package ever released. A twelve track collection, including no fewer than eight Top 50 pop hits, Johnny's Greatest Hits took off almost immediately when released in April 1958 and went on to top the charts for a total of three weeks in June that year. Yet the album hadn't even began to register its popularity - it would remain on the album charts for an unprecedented total of 490 consecutive weeks - almost ten years! It continues to sell even now, having been logged at more than three million copies in the US by the end of 1999, more than forty years after it's original release.
