As a popular balladeer Johnny Mercer was as one of his songs aptly reminds us &ldquotoo marvellous for words&rdquo. A versatile performer he made the songs of others a memorable foil for his colourful Southern style but it is most probably upon such axiomatic lyrics as &lsquoFools Rush In&rsquo (1940) and Ac-Cent-Tchu-Ate The Positive (1944) that his fame now rests.  In a career spanning forty years Mercer&rsquos rare combination of wit and vitality were at the disposal the finest songwriters of his day and whereas his earliest Broadway ventures were ill-fated his later influence in Hollywood and Tin Pan Alley were far-reaching and enduring./font
