Based on the novel, Grania She-King of the Irish Seas, by Morgan Llywelyn, The Pirate Queen was this rare thing on Broadway a swashbuckler, with a book by Alain Boublil, Claude-Michel Schönberg and Richard Maltby, Jr, music by Schönberg, and lyrics by Boublil and Maltby. With Graciela Daniele on hand to stage the musical numbers, many borrowed from the Irish vernacular, and Frank Galati directing, it should have been a monster hit. But while audiences had warmed to Boublil and Schönbergs previous hits, Les Miserables and Miss Saigon, the high seas saga of Grania left them cold, and the musical, which had opened on April 5, 2007 closed after playing 85 performances, the many beauties in its score notwithstanding.
