The Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein musical South Pacific had proved to be a major success when it opened on Broadway in 1949, yet it was to take nearly ten years before a film version hit the screens. The composers were able to ensure that all of the songs that featured in the stage version made it to the screen, although several of the actors and actresses in the film version had their voices dubbed. The album topped the US charts for 31 weeks and the UK charts for 115 weeks, including one straight run of 70 weeks. Not suprisingly, this domination of the charts has never been equalled, let alone bettered.
